The Red Hook Criterium is a unique nighttime bike race in Brooklyn, New York. Each March, more than 80 amateur cyclists - business owners, artists and bike messengers by day - descend on Red Hook's industrial streets, bringing with them their fixed gear, brakeless, single speed bikes (and a hefty dose of courage) to race on a techinical course. The athletes are as different as can be, but they've all got the same goal in mind: winning the famed cobblestone trophy.

This is a story about one rider's journey towards his first-ever Red Hook Crit. Frank Warren, owner of the Breukelen Coffee House in Crown Heights, is a passionate amateur cyclist who dreams of making a podium finish and cementing his name on the fixed gear circuit. But running a successful business while training for the biggest race of his life is a difficult balancing act. Can he do both?

Through Frank, we learn that fixed gear cycling is more than a hobby, a sport, an exercise. It's a lifestyle, a culture, a worldwide movement. And if the criterium race format catches on and explodes likes he knows it can - fixed gear riding may very well take over skateboarding's role and become the next big urban sport.

Have you ever wondered why people hack their iPhones? Have you ever wondered what the term "jailbreak" means in relation to an iPhone? To jailbreak ones iPhone means to lift ALL the restrictions Apple puts on it. People say iPhones suck because of Apple's tight-fisted, unrelenting grip but I say Apple put exploits in their hardware and code so the jailbreaking community can thrive. I've been jailbreaking every generation of iPhone for years and have been enjoying features and un-approved software for years. I found a jail-break only app that records what I do on my screen. In this video, I'm demonstration some of the jailbreak features and software I have installed on my iPhone.

Valley Preferred Cycling Center 360° Panorama

Several weeks ago I was shooting at the VPCC and wanted to make a 360° panorama. I picked a central location in the infield and set the camera up on a tripod with a cable-release attached to the camera to release the shutter. The pano consists of about 15 images taken at about 20° intervals. The camera was just spun around on the tripod 360° taking photos along the way.

There are basically two formats to use when creating 360° panos: Flash or QTVR (Quick Time Virtual Reality). Since I think Flash sucks, QTVR was the only way to go. I used Adobe CS5 to stitch together all 15 images to make one large .jpg. CS5 did a pretty good job. There is only one part of the pano that doesn't match up, which I believe is "user error" on my part. I then fed that .jpg into Pano2VR to make the .mov file. In order to view the file below, you must have the Apple Quick Time plugin installed in your web browser.

Mike Yozell and Brad Ford had a cyclocross training camp in Emmaus, PA over the weekend. There was a great turnout with first-time cyclocrossers and veterans combined. My wife was one of the participants and she says she learned a lot and wouldn't have been able to enter this Fall's season without instruction. Luckily Mike Yozell is a great teacher! I took a few photos at the beginning of the class, which can be found HERE.

Tandemonium!

Last night was Tandemonium at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center. This is my favorite event of the entire season. It's awesome to see the guys navigate those HUGE tandems at blazing speed. It's amazing how nimble they can be. Also, USA Cycling Tandem Track Nationals was held last night. Congratulations to Andy Lakatosh and Giddeon Massie for taking home the Stars and Stripes!
